do you have plans to start work on this topic any time soon? not being able to look up users by metadata or traits is quite painful sadly

Yes, we actually do have plans to implement this fairly soon, if nothing unforeseen happens likely in the second half this year.
Probably first a lookup by email address, I am not sure how exactly the feature will look though.
