Hey @high-optician-2097, where can I find the differences between the Self-Hosted and Hosted version of the Ory productions? Are there any differences at all other than the GUI?
We are the perfect customer for Ory Cloud. We do not want to maintain and/or anything that we could instead pay for it and work around your solutions. The concern is that sometimes clients and situations will require us to have more control, and OSS will be the solution: sometimes clients barely have the money, other times for compliance reasons, or they have the money, but it becomes less cost-effective over time. I don’t want to make mistakes from the past by using our energy in a technology that locks us in those situations, and all the energy used to work around the product is wasted, and we need to start over.

Good question! Feature and API wise there is parity for the most part between the two. Regarding concrete differences: Open Source • Operational model is up to you (sometimes an advantage, often a disadvantage) • Has the same code as the Ory Network (for the most part) Ory Network • Ships administrative UIs • Provides quality of life: CLI, SDKs, backwards compatibility, integrations, it just works stuff • Has a security model built in for administrative access, anti-bot automation, fraud prevention • Is multi-tenant capable • Receives features with feature flags 3-6 months before it lands in OSS • No downtime during migrations • Provides SLAs (currently only enterprise) We also plan more things on the network to make businesses lifes easier, part of this will be analytics and ory intelligent security! Open source has a short list because everything that is good on the network bases on that open source :) We will also add some documentation around this soon to make the differences more clear cut

Personally, disclosing exactly what the differences are down to the code components will bring a lot of respect and value. Honestly vague description isn’t appreciated no more, feels disrespectful from those companies that keep it vague when knowing what exactly I will need and at what stage. I don’t mind things like “we run it for you, every else is almost exactly the same” and that is what I would personally see from Ory. My problem is not paying, my concern is in some way commit so much resources to you and then end up in a frustrating situation. Most of the time I prefer to be asking the startup companies to pay for things (we pay for FusionAuth at the moment) knowing that at some point it will not be cost effective if we lock ourself into some pricing model that don’t take into consideration scaling a company so fast without making any money per user so doesn’t really matter.
Anyway, thank you for the response, would love to see more clarity and hopefully super open platform because I am loving everything you have done and I would like to use our energy into it
h
Thank you for the thoughtful response. Could you give an example what clarity you are looking for? I’m not sure if I understand your feedback right
s
@clever-airline-756 I would join @high-optician-2097 in asking for some better examples of “clarity”. As a leader in Open Source we pride ourselves in transparency. We would like to help you understand Ory better, and become part of the Ory Network if it makes sense for you application. Perhaps you can include a description of your use case, what company you represent, and what materials you need to make a decision. Keep in mind, as is usual, that we cannot disclose everything about our network infrastructure since there are some security sensitive aspects. I hope this help. Thank you for using Ory.

First, let me make something clear, I couldn't be any happier with all of you in terms of transparency and your amazing contribution to open source. So please take my words as a way to express my fears and frustration with others, nothing towards you. Take this as an example of what not to do: https://fusionauth.io/pricing?step=plan&hosting=self-hosting Like, I am not the domain expert on IAM systems, so them teaching me exactly what is behind "Premium authentication features" would be something that I personally would appreciate. • But we dont want to cluster the Marketing Pricing Page That could be something I would understand, but I couldn't figure out what exactly those things are until I locked myself into the their stuff, and then having to discover precisely what they meant.
Having more detailed information in terms of use cases, and limitations would be much appreciated. • What use cases and limitations? Well, that is why I would love and seriously respect you over everything else, and I would do my best to make sure you are successful
if
you put yourself in my shoos as somebody that is not a domain expert, and dont have enough experience, and you teach me back exactly what things will be different, and not just that, but also when and why I will need them.
That is what a full transparency would look like to me
Does that makes sense?
s
@clever-airline-756 that helps a lot. We are now working on 1. adding details in the website 2. adding more use cases and examples 3. improving the Ory Network docs Can you please DM me with your details for some cool Ory swag?
c
Hey peeps, any updates regarding this topic?
h
@magnificent-energy-493 🙂
m
Was there something specific you were interested in? We shipped a lot of improvements to the docs and website since then, please have a look. Also new changelog: https://www.ory.sh/changelog
c
I would probably expect some section in the marketing app talking about Ory Open Source (Self-Hosted) vs. Hosted as I mentioned before, navigating the content now is even harder to figure out the differences IMO
m
We are working on a marketing page on ory.sh that will have Self-hosted vs Hosted as the main topic. I will see to follow up here, once it is live. Should not be long now & would love to get your feedback on it.

Let me know, whatever I can do to help! Sorry for throwing more to you
Hey peeps, https://www.ory.sh/ory-network-or-self-hosting-explained-use-cases/ Thank you so much! I seriously respect and appreciate the effort of being as straightforward and transparent as possible! Also, this is generous https://www.ory.sh/ory-network-or-self-hosting-explained-use-cases/#use-case-1000-20000-daily-active-usersmachines you make my life so much easier to justify the cost of Ory! A brilliant move! My only feedback is maybe to document the Features since I am not sure what “Search API” is, and writing it is much easier for people to give that detailed report to CTOs. I know I am going the extra mile, but I am taking the position of someone who has to explain to CTOs but doesn’t have that much bandwidth to do such deep research. The easier you make it, the faster we can commit to Hosted Ory. Again, thank you so much for your fantastic work!
h
Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate that this helps! Noted, we’ll need to better explain the features (especially the ones which are not yet released) 🙂 For Search API it’s basically something like GitHub search but for your users. We’ll build this with elastic or something similar so it’s going to be difficult to replicate in self hosted
